An ecdysteroid from Ajuga turkestanica that became one of the most hyped supplements of recent years. There are no human trials of turkesterone specifically, and independent testing has repeatedly found products containing little or none of it.

What it is
Turkesterone is a phytoecdysteroid found in Ajuga turkestanica, a plant native to Central Asia, particularly Uzbekistan. It belongs to the same family of compounds as ecdysterone, differing in an additional hydroxyl group.
Its rise was driven almost entirely by social media rather than by research, and demand ran far ahead of legitimate supply. Ajuga turkestanica is not widely cultivated, and genuine turkesterone is difficult and expensive to isolate.
That supply gap produced a serious authenticity problem. Independent analyses have repeatedly found products labelled turkesterone containing negligible turkesterone, and in many cases containing ecdysterone instead, which is cheaper and a different compound. Some contained no detectable ecdysteroids at all.
How it works
The proposed mechanism mirrors that suggested for ecdysterone: activation of the oestrogen receptor beta pathway leading to increased protein synthesis, without binding the androgen receptor. This is why it is described as non-hormonal despite being structurally a steroid.
Preclinical work on ecdysteroids generally has reported effects on the Akt/mTOR pathway and on protein synthesis in muscle tissue, alongside some findings on glucose handling.
An important gap: much of what is claimed for turkesterone is extrapolated from research on ecdysterone, a related but distinct compound. Turkesterone's own bioavailability is poorly characterised, and its larger structure may make absorption worse rather than better.
What the evidence shows
There are no published human clinical trials of turkesterone. Every claim made for it in the consumer market rests on either preclinical rodent work on ecdysteroids or on the single ecdysterone trial in resistance-trained men, which studied a different compound.
Anecdotal reports are unusually unreliable here because of the product authenticity problem. Where testing shows many products contain little turkesterone, user experience cannot distinguish between the compound working, a substituted compound working, or expectation.
The fair summary is that turkesterone is an interesting compound with essentially no direct human evidence, sold in a market with documented authenticity failures. Anyone buying it should treat it as an experiment rather than an established option.
Dosing
Products commonly supply 500-1,000 mg daily of extract, split across two servings and run in blocks of 8-12 weeks alongside training. These figures come from product convention, not from human research.
The critical distinction is extract versus active content. A capsule stating 500 mg of Ajuga turkestanica extract standardised to 10 per cent turkesterone supplies 50 mg of turkesterone. Products advertising 500 mg of turkesterone at ordinary prices should be treated with real scepticism given what genuine material costs.
Third-party certificates of analysis matter more here than for almost anything else in this index. Without one, you cannot know what you are taking.

Safety and side effects
No serious adverse effects have been widely reported, and ecdysteroids as a class have dietary exposure through spinach and quinoa. Users occasionally report nausea and digestive discomfort, sometimes attributed to the extract's bitterness.
There is no human safety data specific to turkesterone, and no hormonal suppression has been demonstrated, consistent with the absence of androgen receptor binding. No post-cycle therapy is required.
The practical safety issue is again product identity. If a product does not contain what it claims, its actual safety profile is unknown, because its actual contents are unknown. That is a real risk rather than a pedantic one.
Who should avoid it
Not established for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Not suitable for under-18s. Speak to your doctor before use if your hormones are being monitored or managed, or if you take regular medication.
