What it is

Pea protein is made from yellow split peas, not garden peas. The protein is separated from the starch and fibre, producing an isolate typically 80 to 85 per cent protein by weight.

Its amino acid profile is unusually good for a plant protein. Leucine sits around 8 per cent, which is lower than whey's 10 to 12 per cent but higher than most plant sources, and it is particularly rich in lysine and arginine.

Its weakness is methionine, one of the nine essential amino acids. That is not a fatal flaw — it simply means pea alone is a less complete package than whey, and it is the specific reason pea and rice are so often blended, since rice has the opposite profile.

How it works

Like any protein, pea protein supports muscle protein synthesis by supplying leucine to trigger the process and the remaining essential amino acids to build with.

Because its leucine content is lower than whey's, a larger serving is needed to reach the 2.5 to 3 gram leucine threshold that drives a full response. This is the practical consequence of the profile difference and the main adjustment to make.

Digestion rate sits between whey and casein. Pea protein is also naturally free of lactose and of the milk proteins that cause dairy allergy, which is why it dominates the allergen-friendly end of the market.

What the evidence shows

Trials comparing pea protein with whey in resistance-trained individuals have generally found comparable gains in muscle thickness and strength when total protein intake is matched. This is the most useful finding for anyone choosing between them.

Studies measuring muscle protein synthesis directly tend to show a slightly smaller response from pea at equal doses, consistent with the lower leucine content. Increasing the serving size closes most of that gap.

The practical conclusion is that pea protein works, and that the plant versus animal protein debate matters far less than total daily protein intake. Anyone avoiding dairy is not making a meaningful compromise by choosing it.

Dosing

Aim for 25-40 g of protein per serving, toward the upper end of that range rather than the lower. Because leucine content is lower than whey, roughly 30-40 g gets you comfortably past the threshold where a 25 g whey serving would do. Check protein per serving rather than scoop size. An 80 per cent isolate at a 30 g scoop delivers around 24 g of protein. Pea protein has a distinct earthy taste and a slightly gritty texture that most people notice. Blending rather than shaking, and using it in smoothies or oats rather than plain water, makes a considerable difference. Pairing with rice protein improves both the amino acid profile and the taste.

Safety and side effects

Pea protein is a food and is well tolerated. Bloating and gas are the most common complaints, generally milder than with whey for people who find dairy difficult.

As a legume product it can cause reactions in people sensitive to legumes, including peanut, and allergen declaration applies. Pea allergy is uncommon but not unknown.

Heavy metal content has been raised as a concern for plant proteins generally, since plants take up what is in the soil. Reputable suppliers test for it, and a certificate of analysis is worth asking for.
