What it is

Whey is one of the two protein fractions in milk, making up roughly 20 per cent of it, with casein accounting for the rest. It separates out as the liquid left behind when milk curdles during cheesemaking, and was for a long time treated as a waste stream.

Concentrate is whey that has been filtered to remove water and some lactose, but not aggressively enough to strip out the fat and remaining milk sugar. The number attached to it tells you the protein percentage by weight: WPC80 is 80 per cent protein, with the balance made up of lactose, fat and moisture.

That remaining fraction is not simply filler. Whey concentrate retains immunoglobulins, lactoferrin and other milk fractions that isolate loses in processing, and it tastes noticeably better and mixes more creamily as a result.

How it works

Whey digests quickly, producing a rapid and pronounced rise in blood amino acids. That spike is what drives the muscle protein synthesis response, and it is the main reason whey outperforms slower proteins for post-training use.

Its advantage over most other protein sources comes down to leucine content. Whey is roughly 10 to 12 per cent leucine, higher than meat, eggs or most plant proteins, and leucine is the amino acid that switches on the machinery for building muscle protein.

It is also a complete protein with a full spectrum of essential amino acids, meaning it supplies both the signal to build and the materials to do it — which is precisely what isolated BCAA products fail to do.

What the evidence shows

Protein supplementation supporting gains in lean mass and strength when combined with resistance training is among the best-established findings in sports nutrition, with large meta-analyses consistently supporting it.

Direct comparisons between concentrate and isolate have generally found no meaningful difference in muscle or strength outcomes when total protein intake is matched. The practical distinction is digestive comfort and macronutrient precision, not results.

The more important finding across the literature is that total daily protein matters far more than the source or the timing. Someone hitting 1.6 to 2.2 g per kg of bodyweight from ordinary food will not gain much by adding a shake beyond convenience.

Dosing

A serving of 20-40 g of protein supplies roughly 2.5-3 g of leucine, which is the threshold for a full muscle protein synthesis response in most adults. Larger, older or heavier individuals sit at the upper end. Check the protein per serving rather than the scoop size. A 30 g scoop of WPC80 delivers around 24 g of protein, not 30. Timing matters far less than most marketing suggests. Total daily protein is the driver; spreading it across three or four feedings is sensible, but the anabolic window is considerably wider than the thirty minutes once claimed. Concentrate retains more lactose than isolate, so if dairy sits badly with you, that is the reason to consider paying more.

Safety and side effects

Whey is a food and is well tolerated by most people. Bloating, gas and digestive discomfort are the common complaints, and in concentrate these usually trace back to the lactose content rather than the protein itself.

Milk allergen declaration is mandatory. Anyone with a milk allergy must avoid whey entirely, which is a different thing from finding lactose hard to digest — the latter can often be solved by switching to isolate.

The idea that high protein intake harms healthy kidneys is not supported by the evidence. If you have been told your kidneys are not working normally, discuss protein intake with your doctor.

Who should avoid it
