What it is

Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid, a fat molecule with a phosphate head, and a structural component of cell membranes. It is particularly concentrated in the brain, where it makes up a meaningful share of total phospholipid.

It is not the same as L-serine, which is a single amino acid, and taking L-serine is not a route to phosphatidylserine. The similar names cause genuine confusion and the two have separate research bases and separate uses.

Older research used PS derived from bovine brain tissue, which is no longer used for obvious reasons. Modern products use soy or sunflower lecithin. The plant-derived versions differ slightly in fatty acid composition from the bovine material used in early trials, which is a fair caveat when citing that older research.

How it works

As a membrane component, phosphatidylserine influences membrane fluidity and the function of receptors and enzymes embedded within it. In neurons this affects signalling and neurotransmitter release.

The more interesting mechanism for training purposes concerns the stress response. PS appears to blunt the release of cortisol following physical stress, which is the basis for its use around heavy training blocks.

That is a genuinely different proposition from most recovery supplements, which act on inflammation or substrate supply. Whether blunting cortisol is desirable is worth thinking about — cortisol is part of the adaptive response, not simply a problem to be suppressed.

What the evidence shows

The cortisol research is the most relevant here. Several trials have reported reduced cortisol responses to intense exercise with PS supplementation, alongside improvements in perceived exertion and mood after demanding sessions.

Cognitive research is more developed in older adults, where trials have reported improvements in memory measures. Evidence in healthy young adults is thinner, and much of the older literature used the bovine-derived material rather than what is sold today.

Trial sizes are generally modest throughout. The evidence is reasonable rather than compelling, and effects are moderate where they appear.

Dosing

Typical range is 100 to 400 mg daily. Cognitive trials have most often used 100 to 300 mg; the exercise cortisol research has generally used 600 to 800 mg daily, which is considerably higher and worth knowing if that is your reason for taking it. Take with food, since it is a phospholipid and absorbs better alongside fat. Sunflower-derived PS avoids the soy allergen issue and is the sensible default. If you are taking it around training, consider whether you want to blunt cortisol on every session or only during unusually heavy blocks — the stress response is part of how training works.

Safety and side effects

Phosphatidylserine is well tolerated. Reported effects are mild and infrequent, mainly digestive upset and, occasionally, difficulty sleeping when taken late in the day at higher doses.

Soy-derived products require soy allergen declaration. Sunflower-derived versions avoid this entirely and are widely available.
