What it is

NeuroFactor is made from the whole fruit of the coffee plant, the cherry surrounding the bean, which is normally discarded during coffee processing.

It is distinct from both the roasted bean, which supplies caffeine, and from green coffee bean extract, which supplies chlorogenic acid. The fruit has a different polyphenol profile from either.

It contains only a small amount of caffeine, which matters because its claimed effects are not stimulant effects. Whether it is worth taking rests entirely on the growth factor claim rather than on how it feels.

How it works

The central claim concerns brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein involved in the survival and growth of neurons and in forming new connections between them.

BDNF is a legitimate and heavily researched target, associated with learning, memory and mood, and reliably increased by exercise. That is what makes the claim appealing.

The polyphenol profile of the coffee fruit is credited with the effect, though the specific compounds and pathway are not well characterised. It is also worth noting that blood BDNF is a crude proxy for what is happening in the brain, which complicates interpreting the finding.

What the evidence shows

The most cited research reported a substantial increase in blood BDNF following a single dose, compared with green coffee extract, coffee fruit powder and grape seed extract as comparators.

That work is small, acute, and funded by the ingredient's producer, and independent replication is absent.

Crucially, raising blood BDNF is a biomarker change rather than a demonstrated cognitive benefit. Trials showing that people taking NeuroFactor actually think, remember or perform better are lacking. If you want to raise BDNF, exercise does it reliably and for free.

Dosing

The dose used in the research is 100 to 200 mg daily, with 100 mg in the most cited study. It appears within nootropic formulas rather than commonly being sold alone. Set expectations from the evidence rather than the mechanism: what has been shown is a change in a blood marker after a single dose, not a change in how anyone performs. That is a considerable distance from the way the ingredient is usually described.
