What it is
Manganese is a trace mineral, not to be confused with magnesium despite the similar name — they are different elements doing different jobs, and the confusion is common enough to be worth stating.
Sources include wholegrains, nuts, legumes, leafy vegetables and tea. Tea is a particularly notable contributor in the UK, where regular drinkers can obtain a substantial share of their intake from it alone.
Requirements are modest and most diets meet them comfortably. Manganese appears in multivitamins and bone formulas as part of a full mineral profile rather than because anyone identified a widespread shortfall.
How it works
Manganese sits at the centre of manganese superoxide dismutase, the antioxidant enzyme that operates specifically inside mitochondria. That is a significant role, since mitochondria are where most reactive oxygen species are generated.
It is also a cofactor for enzymes involved in forming bone matrix and cartilage, and for several enzymes in carbohydrate and amino acid metabolism.
Manganese additionally participates in the urea cycle, contributing to the clearance of nitrogen waste from protein breakdown.
What the evidence shows
Manganese's essentiality and its enzymatic roles are well established. What is far less established is any benefit from supplementing it in people with ordinary diets.
Genuine shortfall is rare enough that it has been difficult to study, and there is no meaningful body of research showing that supplementation improves bone, joint or metabolic outcomes in well-fed people.
Its presence in bone support formulas reflects its role in bone matrix formation rather than trial evidence that adding it helps. That is a reasonable formulation decision but not a reason to seek it out separately.
Dosing
Adequate intake is around 2 to 3 mg daily for adults, which ordinary food supplies without difficulty. Tea drinkers may exceed this from tea alone.

There is little reason to take manganese deliberately unless your diet is unusually restricted. If you do, note that iron, calcium and phytates all reduce its absorption, so timing away from those improves uptake. Bisglycinate absorbs better than sulphate or oxide.
