What it is

Laxogenin is a brassinosteroid, a class of plant steroid hormone involved in plant growth regulation, originally isolated from Smilax sieboldii. Brassinosteroids are structurally analogous to animal steroid hormones but function through entirely different plant-specific pathways.

The material sold in supplements is generally 5-alpha-hydroxy laxogenin, a semi-synthetic derivative rather than the plant compound itself. This distinction is frequently blurred in marketing that emphasises natural plant origin.

Product quality in this category is a serious and documented problem. Independent analyses of laxogenin-labelled products have repeatedly found either negligible amounts of the claimed compound or, more concerning, undeclared synthetic anabolic agents. Regulators in several countries have taken enforcement action against products in this space.

How it works

The proposed mechanism is an increase in protein synthesis without androgen receptor binding, which is the basis for marketing it as non-hormonal. Preclinical work on brassinosteroids in rodents has reported anabolic-like effects and influence on protein synthesis pathways.

User reports of strength gains are complicated by the adulteration problem. Where products have been found to contain undeclared synthetic anabolic agents, positive user experience may reflect those undisclosed compounds rather than laxogenin.
