Also known as: Huperzia serrata, Chinese club moss, Selagine, HupA
Cognitive & NootropicGood evidence
A potent compound from Chinese club moss that slows the breakdown of acetylcholine. Genuinely active at microgram doses, with an unusually long duration that makes cycling necessary rather than optional.
Typical dose
50.0–200.0 mcg per day
Morning; cycle rather than taking continuously
What it is
Huperzine A is an alkaloid isolated from Huperzia serrata, a club moss used in Chinese herbal practice. Most commercial material is now produced synthetically or from cultivated plant sources.
Doses are measured in micrograms rather than milligrams, which tells you how potent it is. A typical serving is 50 to 200 micrograms, against hundreds of milligrams for most nootropic ingredients.
That potency is the reason it warrants more care than its position in cheap pre-workout blends suggests. It is closer in character to a pharmacologically active compound than to a botanical extract, and treating it casually is a mistake.
How it works
Huperzine A inhibits acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine after it has done its job at the synapse. Slowing that breakdown leaves acetylcholine active for longer.
This is a fundamentally different approach from choline sources like alpha-GPC or citicoline, which supply raw material for making more acetylcholine. Huperzine preserves what is already there. The two approaches combine logically, which is why they often appear together.
The important practical detail is duration. Huperzine A has an unusually long half-life, with enzyme inhibition persisting well beyond a single day. Taking it daily therefore causes accumulation, which is the specific reason cycling matters here and not for most nootropics.
What the evidence shows
The acetylcholinesterase inhibition is well demonstrated and not in question. Huperzine A does what it says at the enzyme level.
Most of the human research has been conducted in older adults in supervised settings, and reviews of that literature have generally been favourable while noting variable trial quality.
Evidence in healthy young adults is much thinner. A small number of trials have reported memory improvements in students, but the research base for the population buying it in pre-workouts is limited. The mechanism is real; the case for a healthy 25-year-old taking it daily is not.
Dosing
Typical range is 50 to 200 micrograms daily. Start at the lower end — this is potent enough that the difference between 50 and 200 is noticeable.
Cycle it. Because the enzyme inhibition persists well beyond a day, continuous daily use causes accumulation and, in many users, diminishing returns and side effects. A common approach is several weeks on followed by an equal break, or dosing only on days you need it.
Pairing with a choline source is sensible, since preserving acetylcholine works better if there is adequate acetylcholine to preserve. Headache on huperzine is often a sign of insufficient choline alongside it.

Safety and side effects
At typical doses huperzine A is generally tolerated, but the side effect profile is more substantial than most nootropics. Reported effects include nausea, sweating, vivid or disturbing dreams, muscle twitching, slowed heart rate and restlessness.
These become considerably more likely with continuous daily use, which is the accumulation problem in practice rather than in theory.
Because it acts on the same enzyme system as several types of prescription medication, speak to your doctor before use if you take anything regularly, particularly anything acting on the brain, nervous system or heart rate. This is not a routine caution for this ingredient.
Who should avoid it
Speak to your doctor before use if you take any regular medication, particularly anything acting on the brain, nervous system or heart rate — huperzine acts on the same enzyme system as several prescription medicines. Cycle rather than taking continuously. Stop if you experience muscle twitching, a slowed heart rate or disturbing dreams. Avoid in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Not suitable for under-18s.
