What it is

Digestive enzyme supplements contain some combination of amylase for starch, protease for protein, lipase for fat, and often lactase for milk sugar and alpha-galactosidase for the carbohydrates in beans that cause gas.

Most are derived from fungal or bacterial fermentation, which is why they work across a wider pH range than animal-derived versions and survive the stomach better.

Potency is expressed in activity units, not milligrams. DU for amylase, HUT for protease, FIP for lipase, ALU for lactase. A product listing only milligrams tells you nothing about how much work it can actually do, and this is the most common way enzyme products obscure being underdosed.

How it works

Enzymes are catalysts that break specific chemical bonds. Amylase cuts starch into sugars, protease cuts protein into peptides and amino acids, lipase splits fats into fatty acids and glycerol.

A healthy pancreas produces these in considerable excess of what a normal meal requires. That surplus capacity is precisely why supplementing them does little for most people — you are adding to a system that already has spare capacity.

The exceptions are where a specific enzyme is genuinely lacking or the substrate is one humans do not produce an enzyme for at all. Lactase for milk sugar and alpha-galactosidase for the sugars in beans are both in that category, and both work well because they address a real gap rather than topping up a sufficiency.

What the evidence shows

Lactase is the clearest case. Taking it with dairy reliably reduces symptoms in people who struggle with milk sugar, and this is well established.

Alpha-galactosidase for the gas caused by beans and cruciferous vegetables also has reasonable support, and works for the same reason: humans lack the enzyme entirely.

Broad-spectrum enzyme blends taken by people with normal digestion have much weaker support. Some trials report modest reductions in bloating and fullness after large meals, but the effect is small and inconsistent. If your digestion works, these are solving a problem you do not have.

Dosing

Take with the first bites of a meal, not afterwards. Enzymes need to be present while the food is in the stomach to do anything, and taking them after the fact achieves nothing. Match the enzyme to the problem. If dairy is the issue, buy lactase. If beans and vegetables are, buy alpha-galactosidase. A broad blend is the right answer only if you genuinely do not know which food is causing it. Compare products on activity units rather than milligrams. And if you have persistent digestive problems, that warrants proper investigation rather than being managed indefinitely with enzymes — they treat the symptom without answering why it is happening.

Digestive enzymes are well tolerated. Reported effects are mild and infrequent, mainly digestive upset and occasional nausea.

Fungal-derived enzymes can cause reactions in people sensitive to moulds, and some products contain allergens from their production process, so check the declaration.
