What it is

Creatine ethyl ester is creatine with an ethyl group attached, intended to make the molecule more fat-soluble and therefore better able to cross cell membranes.

The reasoning was sound on paper. Creatine monohydrate is water-soluble and relies on a specific transporter to enter muscle, so a form that could pass through membranes directly would in theory need smaller doses and no loading phase.

Testing that idea produced a clear answer, and it went against the product. The ester bond is unstable in stomach acid, and the molecule converts to creatinine, a waste product the body excretes.

How it works

Creatine works by increasing muscle phosphocreatine stores, which regenerate ATP during short maximal efforts. That mechanism is well established and applies to any form that actually reaches muscle as creatine.

The ester was intended to bypass the creatine transporter and enter cells directly.
