What it is

Cordyceps refers to a genus of fungi, two species of which dominate the supplement market. Ophiocordyceps sinensis is the wild Himalayan species that parasitises caterpillar larvae, historically among the most expensive natural products in the world. Cordyceps militaris is a related species that can be cultivated commercially at reasonable cost.

Genuine wild O. sinensis is effectively absent from the retail supplement market at ordinary prices. Products labelled Cordyceps sinensis almost always supply CS-4, a cultivated mycelial strain isolated from the wild fungus, which is a legitimate material but not the same thing as the wild article.

The most consequential quality issue is fruiting body versus mycelium on grain. Much of the market supplies mycelium grown on a rice or oat substrate, sold with the substrate included, which can mean a large fraction of the product weight is starch rather than fungus. Cordycepin, a marker compound, is present in meaningful quantity in C. militaris fruiting bodies and largely absent from C. sinensis.

How it works

The most cited performance mechanism involves improved oxygen utilisation and ATP production. Preclinical work has reported increased ATP availability and effects on mitochondrial function, which would plausibly support aerobic capacity.

Cordycepin, structurally similar to adenosine, is the compound most often credited with biological activity, and has been studied for a broad range of effects including anti-inflammatory and immune actions. Its relevance at oral supplemental doses is complicated by rapid enzymatic degradation.

Beta-glucans, common to medicinal mushrooms generally, contribute immune-modulating activity. Some work also suggests effects on nitric oxide and vasodilation, which would be relevant to the oxygen delivery rationale.

What the evidence shows

Human performance evidence is limited and inconsistent. Some trials in older adults have reported improvements in aerobic capacity measures such as ventilatory threshold, and several small trials using mushroom blends have reported endurance benefits.

Trials in trained younger athletes have been less encouraging, with several finding no meaningful effect on VO2 max or time to exhaustion. This pattern, where benefit appears in lower-capacity populations and fades in trained ones, is common across ergogenic botanicals and should temper expectations.

Interpretation is further complicated by product heterogeneity. Trials using different species, different preparations and different substrate compositions are not really studying the same substance, which makes pooling results across the literature unreliable.

Dosing

Common supplemental range is 1-3 g daily of extract, usually split across two servings. Trials reporting aerobic effects have generally used doses at the higher end over 6-12 weeks. Evaluate products on three points before comparing doses: species, whether the material is fruiting body or mycelium on grain, and whether beta-glucan or cordycepin content is specified. A gram of fruiting body extract with declared beta-glucan content is not comparable to a gram of mycelium-on-grain powder. Beta-glucan content is a more meaningful quality marker than polysaccharide content, which can be inflated by starch from the growing substrate.

Safety and side effects

Generally well tolerated, with mild digestive upset, dry mouth and nausea occasionally reported. Cordyceps has a long history of traditional use, and cultivated species have a reasonable safety record in the trials conducted.

It has immune-modulating activity, which is the main consideration. If your immune system is being managed or suppressed for any reason, that is a conversation to have with your doctor before use rather than a decision to make from a label.

There is also some evidence of effects on blood sugar and on bleeding time. Heavy metal contamination has been documented in some wild-harvested cordyceps, reflecting the soil in growing regions, so certificate of analysis review is worthwhile for this ingredient specifically.

Who should avoid it

Speak to your doctor before use if your immune system is being managed, if you take regular medication, or if your blood sugar or clotting is being monitored. Avoid if allergic to fungi or moulds. Not established for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Stop before scheduled surgery.
