Bacillus Coagulans

Also known as: LactoSpore, GanedenBC30, Weizmannia coagulans, Spore-forming probiotic

Branded IngredientsGood evidence

A spore-forming probiotic that survives heat, shelf storage and stomach acid where ordinary probiotic strains do not. That durability is the whole proposition, and it is a genuine one.

What it is

Bacillus coagulans is a spore-forming bacterium, which makes it fundamentally different from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains that dominate the probiotic category.

Spores are dormant, protected structures. They survive heat, moisture, shelf storage and stomach acid, then germinate into active bacteria once they reach the intestine.

That solves the practical problem with probiotics: getting them there alive. Ordinary strains need refrigeration, careful formulation and enteric protection, and a proportion still dies. Spore formers can be baked into a protein bar and still work. LactoSpore and GanedenBC30 are the common branded strains.

How it works

Once germinated in the intestine, Bacillus coagulans produces lactic acid and other compounds that inhibit less desirable organisms, and interacts with gut immune tissue in the way probiotics generally do.

It also produces digestive enzymes, which is the basis for research on it improving protein absorption when taken alongside protein.

As with most probiotics it is transient rather than permanently colonising, so benefits persist while you keep taking it. Strain specificity applies here as it does to all probiotics: findings for one strain do not transfer to another.

What the evidence shows

Trials have reported reduced digestive discomfort, bloating and gas, with reasonably consistent findings across several studies.

The more interesting research for a training audience concerns protein absorption. Trials have reported improved amino acid appearance in blood and reduced muscle damage markers when Bacillus coagulans is taken alongside protein, though these are small and often industry-linked.

The survivability advantage is not in dispute and is the strongest part of the case. Whether the downstream benefits match those of well-studied Lactobacillus strains is less clear, since the two have been studied for different outcomes.

Dosing

Typical doses are 1 to 2 billion CFU daily, considerably lower than the counts advertised for Lactobacillus products. That is not underdosing — it reflects that far more of the spores arrive alive. This is the point worth understanding when comparing products. A spore former at 2 billion CFU may deliver more live organisms to the intestine than a refrigerated Lactobacillus product at 50 billion. Taken with protein if absorption is the goal. It requires no refrigeration and tolerates being formulated into bars, drinks and baked products, which is its practical advantage.

Safety and side effects

Bacillus coagulans is well tolerated, with a good safety record and long use in fermented foods. Mild bloating in the first days of use is the usual complaint and settles.

As with any live organism, anyone whose immune system is compromised, who has a long-term intravenous line, or who is seriously unwell should seek medical advice before use.

Speak to your doctor before use if you are under medical care. Otherwise this is among the more robust and better-tolerated probiotic options.

Who should avoid it

Speak to your doctor before use if your immune system is compromised, if you have a long-term intravenous line, or if you are seriously unwell. Speak to your doctor if you are under medical care. Expect mild bloating in the first few days.
