Algal Oil

Also known as: Algae oil, Vegan omega-3, Schizochytrium, DHA algae oil, Marine algae oil

FoundationalStrong evidence

EPA and DHA produced directly by marine algae, the organisms fish get theirs from. The only credible plant-based source of long-chain omega-3, and it works as well as fish oil.

What it is

Algal oil is extracted from marine microalgae grown in controlled fermentation tanks. Schizochytrium is the most commonly used genus.

Fish do not manufacture EPA and DHA. They accumulate it by eating algae, or by eating things that ate algae. Algal oil goes straight to the original source and skips the fish entirely.

Most algal oils are DHA-dominant, with less EPA than a typical fish oil. Combined EPA and DHA products exist and are worth seeking out if you want both, since the ratio varies considerably between brands.

How it works

EPA and DHA from algae are chemically identical to those from fish and do exactly the same things: incorporate into cell membranes, serve as substrates for the mediators that resolve inflammation, and compete with omega-6 derived signalling.

DHA is particularly concentrated in brain and retinal tissue, which is why DHA-dominant algal oils are often positioned around cognitive and eye applications.

The body can convert some DHA back to EPA through a retroconversion pathway, which partly offsets the lower EPA content of most algal products.

What the evidence shows

Trials comparing algal oil with fish oil have consistently shown equivalent increases in blood omega-3 levels when EPA and DHA content is matched. Bioequivalence is well established.

Since the fatty acids are identical, the substantial evidence base built on fish oil applies here too, provided the dose is matched.

For anyone eating plant-based, this is the only supplement that reliably raises EPA and DHA status. Flaxseed and other plant sources supply ALA, and human conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA is too poor to rely on.

Dosing

Dose by combined EPA and DHA content, exactly as with fish oil: 1,000 to 2,000 mg daily for general use. Check the EPA to DHA split. Many algal oils are heavily DHA-weighted, and if you want EPA specifically, look for a product that supplies meaningful amounts of both. Take with a meal containing fat, which improves absorption considerably. Algal oil is generally more expensive per milligram of omega-3 than fish oil, which is the honest trade for it being plant-based and free of the contaminant and sustainability questions.

Safety and side effects

Algal oil is well tolerated and generally causes less reflux and aftertaste than fish oil, which many people find a genuine advantage.

Because it is grown in controlled tanks rather than harvested from the sea, it avoids the mercury and environmental contaminant questions that apply to fish oil.

As with any omega-3, high intakes modestly affect how readily blood clots. Speak to your doctor before use if you take anything affecting clotting, and stop high doses before surgery.

Who should avoid it

Speak to your doctor before use if you take anything affecting blood clotting. Stop high doses before scheduled surgery. Suitable for vegans, with no fish or shellfish allergen concern, though check individual product declarations.
