What it is
Fadogia agrestis is a shrub native to Nigeria and other parts of West Africa. The stem is used in traditional practice, where it is known locally as bakin gagai, principally as an aphrodisiac and for fever.
Its presence in the Western supplement market is recent and owes almost entirely to online discussion rather than to accumulated evidence. It is typically sold as a stem extract, often standardised to a stated alkaloid or saponin percentage, though the compounds responsible for any activity have not been definitively identified.
Because commercial interest outpaced the supply chain, extract quality and species verification are genuine concerns in this category. There is no established standardisation convention, which makes meaningful product comparison close to impossible.
How it works
The proposed mechanism is stimulation of testosterone production, possibly through effects on luteinising hormone signalling or directly on Leydig cell activity. This is inferred from the rodent data rather than demonstrated in a mechanistic study.
Saponins and alkaloids present in the stem are the compounds usually credited, by analogy with other traditional aphrodisiac botanicals. Which specific constituents are active, and by what pathway, has not been established.
It is worth being explicit that no mechanism has been confirmed in humans, and no pharmacokinetic work describes what an oral dose does in a human body. The mechanistic account offered in marketing is considerably more confident than the underlying science warrants.
What the evidence shows
There are no published human trials of Fadogia agrestis. The entire evidential basis for its reputation is a small rodent study, now some years old, which reported increases in serum testosterone and in measures of sexual behaviour in rats given aqueous stem extract.
That study is frequently cited in isolation. The same body of rodent work also reported adverse findings at higher doses and longer durations, including signs of testicular tissue damage. Presenting the testosterone finding while omitting the toxicity finding is a selective reading of a single small dataset.
Extrapolating from rodents to humans is unreliable at the best of times. Doing so from one study, without dose-translation work, human pharmacokinetics or any safety trial, is not a sound basis for confident use. The preliminary grading here is generous rather than harsh.
Dosing
Commercial products commonly supply 300-600 mg daily of stem extract. It is important to understand that this range has no evidential basis: it is derived from market convention, not from human dose-ranging research or from validated translation of animal doses.
Users typically run it in limited blocks of 4-8 weeks with breaks, a practice that reflects caution about the toxicity findings rather than any established protocol.
Given the absence of standardisation conventions and documented sourcing concerns in this category, supplier certificates of analysis and species verification carry more weight here than for most botanicals.

There is no human safety data for Fadogia agrestis. That absence is the single most important fact about this ingredient, and it should not be presented as evidence of safety.
Rodent research has reported dose-dependent signs of testicular toxicity with prolonged administration, alongside markers suggesting effects on liver and kidney tissue at higher doses. Whether these findings translate to humans at supplemental intakes is unknown, and that uncertainty cuts both ways rather than being reassuring.
Anyone choosing to use it should do so with awareness of that uncertainty, limit duration, and consider periodic bloodwork covering liver function and hormone panel. Anyone with existing liver, kidney or hormonal conditions should avoid it.
