Our verdict — skip ahead if you're in a hurry

Turkesterone is the better choice for most experienced lifters who want the strongest anecdotally-supported natural anabolic available. Results typically come faster — most users notice something by week 4-6.

Beta ecdysterone wins on human research. It is the only ecdysteroid with significant peer-reviewed clinical trial data in humans, and it is the safer option for tested athletes.

Want both? Our Fully Loaded Stack combines turkesterone and beta ecdysterone with ashwagandha, creatine and more. It is our most complete natural muscle-building protocol.

If you've been researching natural muscle-building supplements in 2026, you've almost certainly come across both turkesterone and beta ecdysterone. Both are ecdysteroids — a class of naturally occurring plant compounds that have attracted serious attention in sports nutrition for their ability to support muscle protein synthesis without affecting testosterone or requiring post-cycle therapy.

The question of which is better gets asked constantly, and most of the articles attempting to answer it are written by people who don't make either product. We do. We've been manufacturing both at our GMP-certified facility in Liverpool since 2008, and this is our honest, no-spin comparison.

We'll cover the science, the real-world results we've seen, the dosing protocols that work, and when each compound makes more sense for your specific goals. We'll also address the most searched follow-up question — whether stacking both together is worth doing.

⚠️ Worth noting upfront Neither turkesterone nor beta ecdysterone are anabolic steroids. Neither bind to androgen receptors. Neither require PCT. Both are legal in the UK and most countries. If you are a tested athlete, see our note on WADA status in the comparison table below.

1. What are turkesterone and beta ecdysterone?

Both compounds belong to a family called ecdysteroids — naturally occurring steroid-like molecules found in certain plants and insects. In plants, they serve as a defence mechanism against insect predators. In humans, they appear to have interesting effects on muscle metabolism — though the two compounds differ significantly in their source, potency, and research background.

Turkesterone

Turkesterone is sourced primarily from Ajuga turkestanica, extracts for Ajuga Range from 1% right upto 20%, 20% being notoriously hard to find ( near impossiblte in fact, we opt for a 10% extract from Uzbekistan) a plant native to Central Asia (particularly Uzbekistan and Tajikistan). It is one of the most biologically active ecdysteroids found in nature, and the plant itself can contain up to 11% turkesterone by dry weight — making high-purity extraction commercially viable.

It gained mainstream attention in the fitness community around 2021 and has sustained significant interest since, driven largely by anecdotal reports of lean muscle gains and improved recovery without the side effect profile of hormonal compounds.

Beta ecdysterone (20-hydroxyecdysone)

Beta ecdysterone — also known as 20-hydroxyecdysone or 20E — is found in a much wider range of plants, including spinach, quinoa, and various herbs. It has been studied in scientific literature since the 1960s, giving it a far longer research history than turkesterone. It is also the only ecdysteroid that has been directly studied in humans in properly controlled clinical trials.

2. How do they work?

This is where most articles and most blog posts and even dare i say it 'influencers' get vague. Here is what the current evidence actually suggests:

Both turkesterone and beta ecdysterone are thought to promote muscle protein synthesis through estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) activation and stimulation of the PI3K/Akt signalling pathway — a key pathway involved in muscle hypertrophy and recovery.

Critically, neither compound binds to androgen receptors. This is the fundamental reason they do not produce the side effects associated with anabolic steroids or SAR.Ms — no testosterone suppression, no hormonal disruption, no need for post-cycle therapy.

They also appear to reduce myostatin expression (myostatin inhibits muscle growth) and may increase circulating IGF-1 levels, though this data comes primarily from animal and in vitro studies rather than confirmed human trials.

In plain English: Both compounds appear to signal your muscle cells to synthesise more protein and recover faster, using a completely different mechanism to steroids. They work with your body's existing hormonal environment rather than overriding it.

3. The science — what research actually shows

We're going to be straight with you here, because most articles aren't: the research on both compounds is still developing, and there are important differences in the quality of evidence available for each.

Beta ecdysterone: the better-researched compound

Beta ecdysterone has genuine human clinical data behind it. The most significant study is by Isenmann et al. (2019, Archives of Toxicology) — a WADA-funded, 10-week intervention study in 46 trained young men. Participants were split into groups receiving 200mg ecdysterone, 800mg ecdysterone, or placebo alongside a strength training programme.

The result: participants dosed with ecdysterone showed significantly higher increases in muscle mass compared to the placebo group. The results were strong enough that the researchers recommended including ecdysterone on WADA's list of prohibited substances — a significant statement about its efficacy. Thankfully Ecdysterone is still fully legal, its also worth pointing out that Beta Ecdysterone and Ecdysterone are the same thing! just a variation on the name.

There is also meaningful in vitro data showing ecdysterone induces hypertrophy in muscle cell cultures (C2C12 myotubes), supporting the mechanistic plausibility of its effects.

Turkesterone: promising but evidence-limited in humans

Turkesterone's evidence base is primarily from animal studies, which consistently show strong anabolic effects — enhanced muscle protein synthesis, reduced muscle breakdown, and increased muscle fibre size. These results are compelling, but the gap between animal pharmacology and human outcomes is a well-known challenge in supplement science.

Human clinical data on turkesterone specifically remains limited. The anecdotal reports from the bodybuilding community are extensive and largely positive, and the mechanistic rationale is plausible, but we do not yet have the same quality of controlled human trial data that exists for beta ecdysterone.

⭐ Our real-world perspective  Having formulated and sold both compounds since early 2018, and having spoken directly to thousands of our customers, our observation is that turkesterone typically produces more noticeable results in the first 4-6 weeks and usually at a dose of 500mg-1g per day ( which is typically between 2-4 capsules per day depending on brand— We see this moreso in experienced lifters who have already plateaued on other natural supplements. Beta ecdysterone tends to deliver slower, more gradual lean mass improvements that compound over a longer cycle. Both work. The difference is more about speed of onset and the type of gains than overall efficacy." TLDR : Take Turkesterone if you want a faster 'hit' Take Beta Ecdsysterone for the Long haul!

5. Which should you choose?

Here is a straightforward decision framework based on your goals and situation:

Choose turkesterone if:

  • You are an experienced lifter who has plateaued and wants a meaningful natural edge
  • You want faster, more noticeable results — most users report visible changes within 4-6 weeks
  • You are not subject to drug testing in competition
  • You are comfortable with a compound that has strong anecdotal support but less human clinical data
  • You want the strongest natural anabolic currently available without hormonal risk

Choose beta ecdysterone if:

  • You are a natural or tested athlete and want the compound with cleaner research credentials (note: it is on WADA's monitoring list — check your sport's specific rules)
  • You prefer a longer, more gradual lean muscle approach — 8-12 week cycles
  • You are newer to natural performance supplements and want to start with the better-studied option
  • You value peer-reviewed human data above anecdotal community reports

6. Can you stack turkesterone and beta ecdysterone together?

This is the most commonly searched follow-up question — and the honest answer is: yes, but with caveats.

Both compounds work through overlapping pathways, primarily ERβ activation and PI3K/Akt signalling. Because the mechanisms are similar rather than complementary, stacking both does not necessarily produce a synergistic, additive effect. There are currently no controlled human studies specifically examining the combination.

The community consensus is that stacking both is unlikely to cause harm, but the incremental muscle-building benefit over running turkesterone alone is unclear. If budget is a consideration, the money is probably better spent on a higher dose of one compound than a lower dose of both.

When the stack does make sense

The case for running both gets stronger when you consider the full context of a performance stack. Our Fully Loaded Stack combines turkesterone and beta ecdysterone alongside ashwagandha, omega 3, and creatine monohydrate. In that context, the two ecdysteroids are contributing to one part of a multi-mechanism protocol — and the broader stack makes sense as a complete natural muscle-building approach. This is quite literally the holy grail of a natural muscle building stack.

7. Dosing and cycle length

Turkesterone

  • Dose: 500mg per day — our capsules are dosed at this 250mg per day, so 2 per day hits this comfortably.
  • Timing: Take with food — turkesterone can cause mild nausea on an empty stomach
  • Cycle length: Minimum 8 weeks to properly assess results. 12 weeks is ideal for your first run
  • PCT required: No — turkesterone does not suppress natural testosterone production
  • Can it be run year-round? Yes, though most users prefer to cycle on and off to maintain sensitivity to the compound

Beta ecdysterone

  • Dose: 500mg per day — our capsules are high-dose 250mg per day, 2 capsules per day hits this with ease.  (many competitor products are significantly underdosed)
  • Timing: Take with food. Can be split across two doses if preferred
  • Cycle length: 8-12 weeks. The Isenmann study ran participants for 10 weeks and saw significant results
  • PCT required: No
  • Can it be run year-round? Yes — our product guidance supports continuous use, particularly for athletes focused on long-term lean mass building
On extract standardisation: When buying either compound, extract standardisation matters significantly. Our turkesterone is standardised to a consistent percentage of active turkesterone. Many cheaper products on the market are not properly standardised, meaning the actual active compound content varies between batches — and your results will too. Always check the label.

8. Our products — what we make and why

We manufacture both turkesterone and beta ecdysterone at our facility in Liverpool. We've been producing supplements to GMP standards since 2017, which means every batch is produced under quality controls that many online supplement brands simply don't have.

✏️ Our unique insight here From a manufacturing standpoint, it would be so easy to look at the cheapest raw material for the best bang for your buck, but quite often the phrase buy cheap by twice is very wise.  We hand pick a very select few suppliers to provide with the ingredients we need with the Certificate of Autheticitys we require to back up each and every claim we make ( although we are not technically allowed to make claims ) we will like to make the best products we possibly can!

Both products are produced without unnecessary fillers, use pullulan vegetable capsule shells (suitable for vegetarians and vegans), and are tested for purity. If you have specific questions about sourcing or formulation, our team is available on sales@pro-hormones.co.uk.

9. Frequently asked questions

Is turkesterone stronger than beta ecdysterone?
Anecdotally, yes — turkesterone is generally considered more potent and produces faster results in most users. However, beta ecdysterone has stronger human clinical evidence. The Isenmann et al. 2019 study demonstrated significant increases in muscle mass with beta ecdysterone in a WADA-funded human trial, while turkesterone's evidence base is primarily from animal studies.
Can I take turkesterone and beta ecdysterone together?
Yes, it is safe to combine both. However, because they work through similar pathways, the additional benefit over taking turkesterone alone is not confirmed by research. The most logical way to run both is as part of a broader stack — our Fully Loaded Stack combines both compounds alongside ashwagandha, omega 3, and creatine.
How long does turkesterone take to work?
Most users report noticing something by week 4-6, particularly improved recovery and training performance. Visible changes in lean muscle mass typically become apparent between weeks 6-10. A minimum 8-week cycle is recommended to properly assess results.
Is beta ecdysterone safe for natural and tested athletes?
Beta ecdysterone is currently legal and does not appear on WADA's prohibited list as a banned substance. However, it is on WADA's monitoring programme. Tested athletes should check the specific rules of their sport's governing body before use.
Do turkesterone or beta ecdysterone increase testosterone?
No. Neither compound works by increasing testosterone levels or stimulating LH or FSH production. Their anabolic effects are mediated through estrogen receptor beta activation — which is why they do not require post-cycle therapy and do not suppress natural testosterone production.
Do I need PCT after turkesterone or beta ecdysterone?
No. Neither compound suppresses endogenous testosterone, so post-cycle therapy is not required after a cycle of either.

The bottom line

Turkesterone and beta ecdysterone are two of the most interesting natural performance compounds available in 2026 — and they are genuinely different enough that the comparison matters.

If you want faster, stronger anecdotally-supported results and you are not subject to drug testing, turkesterone is our recommendation. If you want the compound with more rigorous human clinical backing, or you are a tested athlete, beta ecdysterone is the more defensible choice.

And if you want to run the most complete natural muscle protocol available — combining both compounds with ashwagandha, omega 3, and creatine — the Fully Loaded Stack is what we'd recommend.
