Fat Burners: How to Choose

How to choose a fat burner

Most fat burners fall into two groups, and the right one depends on how you handle caffeine and when you train.

  • Stimulant-based formulas. Built around caffeine, often with botanical extracts such as green tea or yerba mate. Check the caffeine per serving and count it alongside your coffee and pre-workout.
  • Stimulant-free options. Ingredients such as acetyl-L-carnitine suit anyone sensitive to caffeine or training late in the day.
  • Clearly dosed labels. Look for products that list the amount of each ingredient. A long proprietary blend without doses makes products impossible to compare.

Who are fat burners for?

  • Lifters in a cutting phase who want a simple daily supplement alongside their diet and training.
  • Anyone following a fat loss plan who wants a routine that is easy to stick to.
  • People training early or after work who use a measured caffeine dose before a session.

When should you take them?

  • In the morning: with or shortly before breakfast.
  • Before training: 30 to 60 minutes before a session, if the product is designed for that.
  • Not late in the day: if your fat burner contains caffeine, avoid it in the late afternoon and evening.
  • Total caffeine: keep your total from all sources within around 400mg a day, the level generally advised for healthy adults.

Frequently asked questions

Do fat burners work?

Fat loss comes from a sustained calorie deficit, enough protein and regular training. A fat burner is designed to fit alongside that plan and works best for people who are already consistent with the basics.

Are fat burners safe?

Taken as directed, the products in this range are generally well tolerated. Check the caffeine content, follow the label, and speak to your GP first if you take medication, have a heart condition or high blood pressure, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Not suitable for anyone under 18.

Can I take a fat burner with a pre-workout?

Usually not on the same day, unless one of them is stimulant-free. Most pre-workouts and fat burners both contain caffeine, so add up the totals before combining them.

How much caffeine is too much?

Around 400mg a day from all sources is the level generally advised for healthy adults. Single doses above roughly 200mg are more likely to cause jitters or disrupted sleep, so start at the lower end of a product's dose.
