Quick answers — skip ahead if you're in a hurry

Is turkesterone a steroid? No. It is a plant compound called a phytoecdysteroid. It does not bind to androgen receptors and does not cause steroidal side effects.

Is it safe? Yes — it is well tolerated, does not suppress testosterone, and does not require post-cycle therapy. Take it with food to avoid nausea.

How long does it take to work? Most users notice something by week 4. Based on our survey of 222 customers, 68% felt benefits within the first 4 weeks.

What dose? 500mg per day is our recommended dose — 2 capsules of our 250mg product daily.

Turkesterone has gone from a niche bodybuilding compound to one of the most searched natural performance supplements on the internet. With that popularity has come a lot of misinformation — about what it is, whether it's a steroid, whether it's safe, and whether it actually works.

We've been manufacturing and selling turkesterone supplements since 2018 and have surveyed 222 of our own customers about their experience. This guide covers everything you need to know, with honest answers to the questions people actually ask — including the ones most manufacturers avoid.

1. What is turkesterone?

Turkesterone is a naturally occurring compound found primarily in the Ajuga turkestanica plant, which grows in the mountainous regions of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. It belongs to a class of plant compounds called phytoecdysteroids — naturally occurring steroid-like molecules that plants produce as a defence mechanism against insect predators.

It is not a synthetic compound. It is not manufactured in a laboratory. It is extracted from a plant and standardised to ensure a consistent concentration of the active compound. Our product uses a 10% extract from Uzbekistan — meaning 10% of the raw material by weight is pure turkesterone.

Turkesterone sits in the same family of compounds as beta ecdysterone (20-hydroxyecdysone), which is the ecdysteroid with the strongest human clinical research. While turkesterone has more limited human trial data, it is generally regarded by the sports nutrition community as the most potent ecdysteroid for muscle-building purposes based on animal research and extensive anecdotal evidence.

2. Is turkesterone a steroid?

This is the most searched question about turkesterone — and it deserves a direct, honest answer.

Turkesterone is not an anabolic steroid. The confusion arises because it is technically classified as a "steroid" in the chemical sense — meaning it has a multi-ring carbon structure. But the word "steroid" in chemistry covers a huge range of compounds including cholesterol, vitamin D, and cortisol. The term "anabolic steroid" refers to a specific subset of synthetic compounds that bind to androgen receptors to drive muscle growth.

Turkesterone does not bind to androgen receptors. This is the critical distinction. It works through a completely different mechanism — estrogen receptor beta activation — which is why it does not produce any of the side effects associated with anabolic steroids: no testosterone suppression, no hormonal disruption, no gynecomastia risk, no hair loss acceleration, no PCT requirement.

The short answer: Turkesterone is a plant steroid, not an anabolic steroid. It has no androgenic activity. It will not affect your natural testosterone production and does not require post-cycle therapy.

Is turkesterone legal in the UK?

Yes, turkesterone is completely legal in the UK. It is sold as a food supplement and is not subject to any controlled substance legislation. It is also not on the WADA prohibited list, though WADA does monitor ecdysteroids — tested athletes should check the specific rules of their sport's governing body.

Will turkesterone show up on a drug test?

Standard sports drug tests screen for anabolic steroids and their metabolites. Turkesterone is not an anabolic steroid and is not screened for in standard testing panels. However, as noted above, tested athletes competing under WADA regulations should verify current guidelines with their sport's governing body before use.

3. How does turkesterone work?

Turkesterone promotes muscle protein synthesis primarily through two mechanisms:

Estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) activation

Turkesterone binds to estrogen receptor beta — not androgen receptors. ERβ activation in muscle tissue promotes protein synthesis and supports muscle hypertrophy without the hormonal side effects of androgenic compounds. This is the same receptor pathway activated by beta ecdysterone, which has stronger human clinical data confirming this mechanism.

PI3K/Akt signalling pathway

Turkesterone also stimulates the PI3K/Akt pathway — a key cellular signalling cascade involved in muscle protein synthesis, recovery, and hypertrophy. Activation of this pathway increases the rate at which muscle cells build new protein, supporting lean mass development and recovery between training sessions.

Additionally, turkesterone appears to optimise the mRNA translation process and promote leucine uptake into muscle cells — leucine being the primary amino acid that triggers muscle protein synthesis. The net effect is a more favourable anabolic environment without any disruption to the endocrine system.

4. Does turkesterone actually work?

Honest answer: Over 100'000 customers seem to think so! Whilst the double blind placebo controlled evidence needs more robust study, the real world customer feedback is that of a resounding 'Yes' Turkesterone works very well for increasing strength size & lean muscle tissue!

What the research shows

The most significant human clinical study on ecdysteroids is the Isenmann et al. 2019 study (Archives of Toxicology) — a WADA-funded, 10-week randomised controlled trial in 46 trained men. This study used beta ecdysterone (not turkesterone specifically) and demonstrated significant increases in muscle mass compared to placebo. The results were strong enough that researchers recommended WADA consider adding ecdysteroids to its monitoring list.

Turkesterone-specific human data is more limited. The animal research consistently shows strong anabolic effects — enhanced protein synthesis, reduced muscle breakdown, increased muscle fibre size — but the gap between animal pharmacology and confirmed human outcomes is a genuine limitation in the current evidence base.

What our customer data shows

We surveyed 222 customers who had purchased and completed a cycle of our German Pharma Turkesterone. The results:

Outcome measured % agreed or strongly agreed
Noticed muscle gains 70.3%
Felt stronger 72.1%
Improved exercise performance 74.8%
Noticed desirable changes to physique 65.3%
Felt benefits within 4 weeks 68%
Did not feel any benefits 12.2%

We include the negative result deliberately — 12.2% of users reported no noticeable benefit. In our experience, this group tends to be beginners who would have made similar gains from training alone, or users whose protein intake was too low to support the anabolic signalling.

⭐ Our honest assessment Turkesterone works best for experienced lifters who have already optimised their training and nutrition and are looking for a genuine natural edge. It is not a shortcut for beginners. The results compound over 8-12 weeks — users who ran the full cycle consistently reported better outcomes than those who stopped early. 5. Turkesterone side effects

Turkesterone side effects is one of the most searched topics about this supplement — and it deserves a thorough, honest answer rather than the usual "no side effects" dismissal.

Reported side effects

Side effect How common? Notes
Nausea / stomach discomfort Occasional The most commonly reported issue. Almost always resolved by taking with food. Not a sign of harm — standard with capsulated herbal supplements.
Mild fatigue (early cycle) Occasional Some users report brief tiredness in the first week. Typically resolves by week 2 as the body adjusts.
Testosterone suppression Not reported Turkesterone does not bind to androgen receptors and does not suppress natural testosterone production. PCT is not required.
Hormonal disruption Not reported No androgenic activity. No estrogenic activity at supplement doses. Does not affect LH or FSH.
Hair loss Not associated Hair loss in men is driven by DHT (a testosterone metabolite). Turkesterone does not increase testosterone or DHT. No causal link established.
Acne Not associated Acne from supplements is typically driven by androgenic activity. Turkesterone has no androgenic activity.
Gynecomastia Not associated Gyno risk comes from compounds that increase estrogen or disrupt the testosterone/estrogen ratio. Turkesterone does neither.
Liver stress Not reported Unlike some synthetic compounds, turkesterone is not 17-alpha alkylated and is not associated with liver stress at supplement doses.
Bottom line on side effects: The primary practical consideration is taking turkesterone with food to avoid nausea. Beyond that, the side effect profile is genuinely minimal compared to most performance supplements. The androgenic side effects people worry about — hair loss, acne, suppression, gyno — are not associated with turkesterone because it has no androgenic activity.

Is turkesterone safe for long-term use?

Current evidence and customer experience suggests turkesterone is well tolerated for standard 8-12 week cycles. Many users run it year-round without reported issues. That said, most experienced users prefer to cycle it — 12 weeks on, 4 weeks off — to maintain sensitivity to the compound. There is no established evidence of harm from extended use at supplement doses.

Is turkesterone safe for under 18s?

We do not recommend turkesterone for anyone under 18. Not because of established harm, but because younger individuals are still developing hormonally and have less established training foundations. The supplement offers the most benefit to adults with a solid training base.

6. Turkesterone dosage — how much to take

Dosage is where most turkesterone guides fall short. Here is everything you need to know about how much to take and when.

Factor Recommendation Notes
Standard dose 500mg per day 2 capsules of our 250mg product. This is the dose most supported by anecdotal evidence and aligns with ecdysteroid doses used in clinical research.
Under 95kg bodyweight 500mg per day (2 capsules) Standard dose is appropriate for most users.
Over 95kg bodyweight 500-750mg per day Larger individuals may benefit from a slightly higher dose. 3 capsules (750mg) is the upper end of our recommendation.
Maximum dose 750mg per day We do not recommend exceeding 750mg daily. More is not necessarily better — extract quality and standardisation matter more than raw dose.
Timing With food Always take with a meal to avoid nausea. Can be split — 1 capsule with breakfast, 1 with a meal around training.
Cycle length 8-12 weeks Minimum 8 weeks to meaningfully assess results. 12 weeks is ideal for a first cycle.
Off cycle 4 weeks off Not medically required — turkesterone doesn't suppress anything — but preferred by most users to maintain sensitivity.
On extract standardisation and dosing A 500mg dose from a 10% standardised extract is very different from 500mg of a non-standardised powder. Our product uses Uzbek Ajuga Turkestanica standardised to 10% turkesterone — meaning each 250mg capsule delivers a verified 25mg of pure turkesterone. Many cheaper products are not standardised, meaning the actual active compound content is unknown and variable. When comparing products, always look for the standardisation percentage on the label.

7. How long does turkesterone take to work?

Based on our survey of 222 customers and general customer feedback, here is a realistic timeline of what to expect:

Week What typically happens
Weeks 1-2 Most users notice improved recovery first — less muscle soreness, feeling fresher going into subsequent sessions. Some users report nothing in this window, which is normal.
Weeks 3-4 Training performance improvements typically begin — slightly better endurance, ability to push harder. 68% of our survey respondents felt noticeable benefits by the end of week 4.
Weeks 5-8 Lean muscle changes become more visible for most users — improved muscle hardness and density. Strength increases typically become more consistent in this window.
Weeks 8-12 Peak results window. Users running the full 12-week cycle with consistent training and adequate protein intake report the most significant improvements here. 87% of our survey respondents experienced benefits within 8 weeks.
Why protein intake matters: Turkesterone works by enhancing the body's muscle protein synthesis pathways. If dietary protein intake is too low, there is nothing for those pathways to work with. We recommend a minimum of 1.6g of protein per kg of bodyweight per day during a turkesterone cycle for optimal results.

8. Can women take turkesterone?

Yes — and this is an area where turkesterone has a genuine advantage over many other performance supplements.

Because turkesterone does not bind to androgen receptors and has no androgenic activity, it does not cause the virilisation side effects (deepening voice, increased facial hair, hormonal disruption) associated with compounds that increase testosterone or have androgenic properties. Women can take turkesterone at the same doses as men without these concerns.

The benefits for women are the same as for men — support for lean muscle development, improved recovery, and enhanced training performance. It is particularly well suited to women who train seriously and want a natural compound to support their performance without hormonal risk.

We recommend the same dosing protocol for women as for men: 500mg per day with food, in an 8-12 week cycle.

9. What to stack with turkesterone

Turkesterone works well as a standalone supplement, but stacks particularly well with complementary natural compounds:

Turkesterone + Beta Ecdysterone

The two most studied ecdysteroids. They work through overlapping but complementary pathways — beta ecdysterone has stronger human clinical data; turkesterone has stronger anecdotal potency. See our full comparison: Turkesterone vs Beta Ecdysterone: which is better for muscle?

Turkesterone + Ashwagandha

Turkesterone drives anabolic signalling; ashwagandha reduces cortisol, which would otherwise blunt the anabolic response. A well-paired combination for managing training stress alongside muscle building.

Turkesterone + Tongkat Ali

Tongkat Ali supports free testosterone levels. Stacking with turkesterone covers both the protein synthesis and testosterone optimisation sides of natural muscle building. Our TK ALI 200:1 is a popular pairing.

The complete stack

Our Fully Loaded Stack combines turkesterone, beta ecdysterone, ashwagandha, omega 3 and creatine — a comprehensive natural muscle-building protocol in one bundle, saving over £40 versus buying separately.

11. Frequently asked questions

Is turkesterone a steroid?
Turkesterone is a phytoecdysteroid — a plant compound with a steroid-like chemical structure. It is not an anabolic steroid. It does not bind to androgen receptors, does not increase testosterone, and does not cause anabolic steroid side effects such as suppression, gynecomastia, or hair loss. No PCT is required.
Is turkesterone safe?
Yes. It is well tolerated at supplement doses. The main practical consideration is taking it with food to avoid nausea. It does not suppress testosterone, does not have androgenic activity, and is not associated with liver stress. We do not recommend it for under 18s or during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
How much turkesterone should I take per day?
500mg per day is the standard recommended dose — 2 capsules of our 250mg product. Users over 95kg can take up to 750mg (3 capsules) daily. We do not recommend exceeding 750mg. Always take with food.
How long does turkesterone take to work?
Based on our survey of 222 customers, 68% felt benefits within the first 4 weeks — primarily improved recovery and training performance. Visible lean muscle changes typically become apparent from weeks 5-8. A minimum 8-week cycle is recommended to properly assess results.
Does turkesterone suppress testosterone or require PCT?
No. Turkesterone does not bind to androgen receptors and does not suppress natural testosterone production. Post-cycle therapy is not required after a turkesterone cycle.
Can women take turkesterone?
Yes. Turkesterone has no androgenic activity and does not cause virilisation effects. Women can take the same dose as men — 500mg per day with food. It is particularly well suited to women who train seriously and want natural support for performance and recovery without hormonal risk.
Is turkesterone legal in the UK?
Yes. It is completely legal in the UK, sold as a food supplement, and is not a controlled substance. It is not on WADA's prohibited list, though WADA monitors ecdysteroids. Tested athletes should check their sport's specific rules.
What is the difference between turkesterone and beta ecdysterone?
Both are ecdysteroids working through similar pathways. Beta ecdysterone has stronger human clinical research including a WADA-funded RCT. Turkesterone is generally regarded as more potent anecdotally, with faster onset reported by most users. See our full Turkesterone vs Beta Ecdysterone comparison guide.
Does turkesterone cause hair loss or acne?
No. Hair loss in men is driven by DHT, a metabolite of testosterone. Turkesterone does not increase testosterone or DHT. Acne from supplements is typically driven by androgenic activity — turkesterone has none. Neither hair loss nor acne are associated with turkesterone supplementation.
Should I cycle turkesterone?
A typical cycle is 8-12 weeks on, followed by 4 weeks off. PCT is not required. Some users run it year-round without issues. The off period is recommended to maintain sensitivity to the compound rather than for safety reasons.

The bottom line

Turkesterone is a genuinely interesting natural performance compound with a reasonable evidence base and an excellent safety profile. It is not a steroid, not a hormonal compound, and not a shortcut — but for experienced lifters with their training and nutrition dialled in, it offers a meaningful natural edge that most supplements cannot match.

The key to getting results: run a full 8-12 week cycle, take it with food, maintain adequate protein intake, and have realistic expectations about the timeline. Nearly 90% of our customers who completed a full cycle reported noticeable benefits.
